Should you worry about your child’s teeth grinding?

Teeth grinding, known medically as bruxism, is a condition that can affect both adults and children.

Children who grind their teeth usually do so at night. Most of the time, they are not aware of their teeth-grinding behaviour.

Teeth grinding can cause headaches and jaw pain, and it can also wear down teeth, which may lead children to complain of tooth pain or sensitivity to hot and cold.

We are not always certain why children grind their teeth. Potential causes include:
  • Oral discomfort caused by tooth movement or realignment, allergies, or other minor illnesses
  • The eruption of baby teeth or the emergence of permanent teeth
  • Anxiety, stress, fear, improper tooth alignment, or dietary deficiencies
If you suspect that your child grinds his or her teeth:
  • Try to identify and reduce your child’s stress. Encourage your child to talk openly about their feelings.
  • Promote calming pre-bedtime activities to encourage relaxation.
  • Ensure your child is receiving a proper, balanced diet.
  • Dehydration may be linked to bruxism, so make sure your child is drinking enough water.

While most children stop grinding their teeth over time, if the habit continues, you should inform us. We can help identify potential causes and recommend appropriate steps. Please do not hesitate to contact Example Dental Clinic with any questions or concerns you may have.
