Myths about orthodontic treatment

Being informed about the treatment you are considering for yourself or your child is a good thing. However, with increased awareness, you may also come across information that is inaccurate or based on myths. At Example Dental Clinic, we address some of the most common orthodontic myths:

Myth 1: There is no point in having braces as an adult

Some treatments may take longer for adults than for children because an adult’s facial bones are no longer growing, and certain corrections may not be achievable with braces alone. While it is true that the approach to crooked teeth can differ between adults and children, you are never too old for orthodontic treatment. A healthy, beautiful smile is just as important at the age of 40 as it is at 14. Nowadays, there are many orthodontic treatment options available for adults, and modern braces are far less noticeable than you may expect.

Myth 2: The tighter the braces, the better

Many people ask their orthodontist to keep their braces tight, believing that tighter braces will lead to faster treatment. While braces must apply a certain level of force to move teeth, excessive force can damage the bone and surrounding tissues. Orthodontic treatment involves carefully controlling the amount of force to ensure teeth move in the correct direction without causing harm.

Myth 3: Only braces can straighten my teeth

Not necessarily. With advances in technology, it is now possible to straighten teeth without traditional braces. Options such as Invisalign clear aligners offer an alternative for certain cases. However, clear aligners may not be suitable for correcting more complex bite issues or severely misaligned teeth.

Myth 4: After removing braces, my teeth will stay straight forever

Straightening your teeth with braces is only part of the process. After your braces are removed, we may recommend wearing retainers to help keep your teeth in their new position.

Myth 5: Orthodontic treatment is painful

Thanks to advances in technology, braces have become far more comfortable. Braces do not usually hurt after they are applied, although some patients may experience mild soreness or discomfort, which typically disappears after a few days. Remember, “It does not have to hurt to work.”

Myth 6: The length of treatment is guaranteed

An orthodontist can only provide an estimated treatment length. Treatment times vary from person to person and should not be compared. Many factors affect treatment duration, including how your teeth respond to braces, damage to braces during treatment, oral hygiene habits, missed appointments, and bone density.
